Claudio Ranieri confirmed on Tuesday that he has declined the offer to become Italy’s national team coach following the dismissal of Luciano Spalletti, opting instead to continue as senior advisor at AS Roma.
Spalletti, 66, announced his departure on Sunday after Italy suffered a 3-0 defeat to Norway in their opening World Cup qualifier on Friday.
Ranieri, who retired for a second time after guiding Roma last season, said he was honoured to be approached by Italian Football Federation president Gabriele Gravina.
“I thank President Gravina for the opportunity, a great honour, but I have reflected and decided to remain available to Roma in my new position totally,” he told Italian news agency ANSA.
“The Friedkins (Roma owners) gave me their full support and backing for whatever decision I had made regarding the national team but the decision is mine alone.”
Ranieri led Roma to a fifth-place finish in Serie A last season, securing a spot in the Europa League. He has since been succeeded by former Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini.
