MG Motor Australia has announced a new entry-level version of its Cyberster electric roadster, which drops the starting price of the Chinese brand’s flagship sports car to just under $100,000.

The new 2025 MG Cyberster 77kWh RWD joins the existing 77kWh AWD variant released in August 2024, running the same ternary lithium-ion battery but with a single-motor rear-wheel drive setup. Pricing start from $99,900 before on-road costs in Australia, $15,100 less than its dual-motor all-wheel drive sibling.

MG’s new base Cyberster variant generates 250kW of power and 475Nm of torque from its rear-mounted electric motor (versus 375kW/725Nm). Zero to 100km/h acceleration takes a claimed 5.2 seconds, and the NEDC driving range is quoted at 552km – versus 3.2 seconds and 500km for the AWD variant, respectively.

Standard specification is largely the same as the dual-motor flagship, save for a couple of details.

The Cyberster RWD swaps out the AWD’s Sport Package Alcantara interior upholstery for Nappa leather, and it rides on smaller 19-inch alloy wheels compared to the AWD’s 20s. All models are also now available in a new Mayfair Blue exterior paint (pictured up top).

MG Motor also confirmed a new hardtop Cyberster GTS at this week’s Shanghai motor show, which is effectively a production version of the MG Cyber GTS concept car revealed at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed last July.

Further details are scant and the GTS is yet to be confirmed for Australia, so stay tuned for further updates as the Cyberster GTS nears its global market introduction in the coming months.

Honda Won't Like The Horsepower On This New VW GTI

Volkswagen is turning heads with its 2026 Golf GTI Edition 50

Volkswagen has revealed the 2026 Golf GTI Edition 50—and it more than gives Honda’s Civic Type R a run for its money. The Golf GTI Edition 50 features 321 horsepower, six more than the Civic Type R and just seven less horsepower than a Golf R. This special edition Volkswagen also boasts 310 lb-ft of torque, matching the Civic Type R. While horsepower is an essential component of the Golf GTI Edition 50 and Civic Type R rivalry, it doesn’t tell the whole story. Let’s take a closer look at these two vehicles’ performance to more clearly illustrate where each model stands.

Performance spotlight: Golf GTI Edition 50 vs Civic Type R

The Golf GTI Edition 50 is Volkswagen’s fastest production Golf to date in track performance, completing the world-famous Nordschleife circuit in seven minutes and 46 seconds. However, the 2025 Civic Type R set a Nordschleife front-wheel drive (FWD) record with a lap time of seven minutes and 44.881 seconds. Honda’s Civic Type R comes standard with high-performance summer tires providing excellent grip, but they’re not the Golf GTI Edition 50’s optional full semi-slicks. The GTI’s semi-slick Bridgestone Potenza Race tires, combined with its available adapted suspension mounts, likely offer a higher ultimate grip threshold, especially in dry conditions.

This Volkswagen’s optional GTI-Performance package, which includes the Bridgestone Potenza Race tires, also comes with 19-inch Warmenau (associated with Volkswagen’s R division) forged wheels and a lightweight R-Performance exhaust system with a rear titanium silencer. The Golf GTI Edition 50 further optimizes front grip and agility with stiffer springs, making for a more track-like ride feel, while the Civic Type R’s adaptive damper system better balances daily and track driving. The Civic Type R’s broader range of adjustability could’ve been the primary factor causing it to edge out the Golf GTI Edition 50 at Nordschleife, given the track’s long, complex design.

Golf GTI Edition 50 vs GR Corolla

Toyota’s GR Corolla is right in the hot hatch mix alongside models like the Civic Type R, but it offers less horsepower and torque than its Honda and Volkswagen competitors, with 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The GR Corolla also hasn’t logged an official lap time at Nordschleife, but it offers standard AWD for those not interested in the Golf GTI Edition 50 and Civic Type R’s FWD configuration. While pricing info hasn’t yet been released for the Golf GTI Edition 50, the GR Corolla is a better bargain, starting at $40,055 compared to the Civic Type R’s $47,045 base MSRP.

Final thoughts

Production of the exclusive Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 is scheduled to begin in Wolfsburg, Germany, at the end of 2025, with deliveries starting in early 2026. While the Civic Type R has Nordschleife lap bragging rights, the Golf GTI Edition 50’s higher horsepower, near-equivalent track time, and optional performance package supply this Volkswagen with extra cachet, amplifying the models’ rivalry. The Golf GTI Edition 50 also outperformed the Golf R 20th Anniversary edition’s Nurburgring lap time of seven minutes and 47.31 seconds, Volkswagen’s previous record production pace achieved in 2022.

From GM to GWM: Ora EV switching to factory that used to build Holdens

The GWM Ora will be the first vehicle sold by the Chinese automaker in Australia to be sourced from Thailand.

The Rayong plant in Thailand – which previously produced the Holden Colorado and Trailblazer for our market, before General Motors sold to GWM in 2020 – currently manufactures not only the Ora electric hatch, but also the Haval H6 mid-size SUV and Tank 300 off-road SUV.

However, only the GWM Ora has been confirmed to be switching to Thai sourcing for the Australian market.

The company confirmed the move after the Ora appeared in Australian Government certification documents with a different Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now.

A GWM Australia spokesperson confirmed the move is due to the Thai plant having production capacity available, and placing a greater focus on right-hand drive production.

The Thai market is right-hand drive like ours, though GWM also builds left-hand drive vehicles at the Rayong plant for Brazil.

GWM upgraded the plant and started production there in 2021, and it has capacity to produce 80,000 vehicles annually. The Ora entered production there in 2024.

It’s not the only Chinese automaker to establish a production facility in Thailand, with BYD, MG and GAC also producing vehicles there. However, none of these auto manufacturers export Thai-built vehicles to our market.
