Pakistan ignored India’s warnings about non-escalation and not targeting military installations, and fired missiles at 15 Indian cities late Wednesday and early Thursday. India responded by disabling Pak air defence radars at several places, including Lahore.

New Delhi:

Pakistan attempts late last night and early this morning to escalate tension with India by targeting military installations in 15 cities in the northern and western parts of the country – including Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Gujarat – have been negated, the government said Thursday.

The government said Indian forces responded by targeting and neutralising Pakistani Air Defence Radars and systems in several locations, including Lahore, in response to Pak attempts to attack military facilities in Srinagar, Pathankot, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Chandigarh, and other locations.

Indian forces’ response, the government underlined this afternoon, was “in the same domain (and) with the same intensity” as the attacks launched by Pakistan. Click here for Operation Sindoor Live Updates

Pak forces used drones and missiles that were disabled by India’s air defence systems.

Sources told news agency ANI HARPY drones were used by India to destroy Pak air defences, while India then used the Russian-made S-400 defence system to shoot down missiles aimed at its cities.

Debris from the destroyed drones and missiles is being collected, the government said, and will add to the volume of evidence supporting India’s charges that Pakistan, or the Pak deep state, supports cross-border terrorism targeting India, whether by financial funding or military training.

Attempted military action against India comes a day after Indian armed forces’ carried out precision strikes at four terrorist camps in Pak and five in Pak-occupied Kashmir, or PoK.

India targeted terror bases and terrorist training camps in Pak and Pak-occupied Kashmir.

Operation Sindoor, as the strikes were codenamed, spanned a 25-minute period that began Wednesday morning at 1.05 am and included a barrage of 24 munitions – from HAMMER smart bombs to SCALP missiles – that destroyed terrorist groups’ HQs and training camps.

Over 100 terrorists were killed in the strikes, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said this afternoon.

Op Sindoor was in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.

Four terrorists from The Resistance Front, a Lashkar-e-Taiba proxy, killed 26 people, many of whom were civilians, at the Baisaran Valley, a tourist hotspot less than 70 km from J&K capital Srinagar. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had vowed vengeance against those responsible.

In a press briefing Wednesday afternoon the Army and Air Force said Sindoor targets had been chosen based on credible intelligence, and that its action was “focused, measured, and non-escalatory”.

The armed forces also pointed out Pak military establishments were not targeted.

The targets chosen included Muridke in Pak’s Punjab province, which housed Lashkar’s HQ and a training camp. The HQ and training camp of another terrorist group – Jaish-e-Mohammed, which was involved in the 2019 Pulwama attack that killed 40 Indian soldiers – was also razed.

Pakistan then was also put on notice; that any attack on Indian military targets will lead to further strikes. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reiterated that warning this morning at an all-party briefing, telling opposition leaders Operation Sindoor is “ongoing” based on Pak’s actions.

The government, meanwhile, has also pointed out that Pakistan has steadily increased the intensity of cross-border firing and shelling, beginning within 24 hours after the Pahalgam attack.

Mortars and heavy calibre artillery shells are now being fired across the border in the Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, Poonch, Mendhar, and Rajouri sectors, the government said.

So far 16 civilians have been killed, including three women and five children.

One Indian soldier has also died, the government said, as it also underlined, again, the Indian military’s commitment to non-escalation provided this is also respected by the Pak Army.

Germany’s Strong Support For India After Op Sindoor

Expressing strong support for India after the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor, Germany has said that the country has every right to defend itself against terrorism.

Addressing a joint press conference with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said, “We were all appalled by the brutal terrorist attack on India on April 22. We condemn this attack on civilians in the strongest terms. Our deepest sympathy goes out to all victims and their families.”

“After military attacks on both sides… and India, of course, has every right to defend itself against terrorism… the fact that a truce is in place is something we appreciate very much,” he added.

Underlining another key point from the Indian perspective, following offers of mediation from the US and President Donald Trump, the minister continued, “What is important now is that this truce remains stable, that dialogue can happen to find bilateral solutions.”

The fact that India will deal with Pakistan only bilaterally has been stressed by India repeatedly since Mr Trump offered to mediate on the Kashmir issue. The Centre has said that any talks with Pakistan will be bilateral and will be restricted to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

This was emphasised again by Mr Jaishankar during the press conference.

“India will deal with Pakistan purely bilaterally. There should be no confusion in any quarter in that regard,” he said.

In his first speech after Operation Sindoor, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that India will not give in to nuclear blackmail by Pakistan and Mr Jaishankar underscored this as well.

“I come to Berlin in the immediate aftermath of India responding to the Pahalgam terror attack. India has zero tolerance for terrorism. India will never give in to nuclear blackmail… We also value Germany’s understanding that every nation has the right to defend itself against terrorism,” the minister said.

Operation Sindoor

Earlier this month, India struck terror bases in at least nine locations in Pakistan – including the headquarters of the Lashkar-e-Taiba in Muridke and Jaish-e-Mohammed in Bahawalpur – as part of Operation Sindoor, which was a response to the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, in which 26 people were killed.

Pakistan responded by attempting to attack Indian military installations and civilian locations by launching drones and missiles on three successive days, but was thwarted by India’s air defence systems. India, in turn, first took out some of Pakistan’s air defence systems, including in Lahore, and then struck key military bases like the all-important Nur Khan airbase, also known as the Chaklala airbase.

Pakistan then sought a ceasefire and India agreed to a pause in hostilities. India has made it clear, however, that it will respond decisively to any terror attack which has its origins in Pakistan.
