Soundarya Sharma knows how to grab attention. Be it her stint in Bigg Boss or her appearance in the ads of Vimal, featuring the top stars, she ensures she gets noticed and talked about. Continuing her endaevour, she played a significant part in Housefull 5, the recently released multi-starrer comic caper. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, the beautiful and talented Soundarya spoke about her Housefull 5 experience and a lot more.

How was the weekend gone by you?
The weekend was fantastic. I am so happy with the response. God is kind (smiles).
What was your reaction when you learned that you have signed a film that is one of the biggest or the biggest multi-starrers ever?
I was in awe. I had never imagined that I would bag such a huge film, starring some of the mega stars of our country, that too of different generations. It was surreal and it came as a blessing. It’s a feat to share screen space with such amazing stalwarts.
At what stage did you learn that there would be two endings?
We did not know. It was a surprise for all of us! We didn’t know how much was shot and how much of it would be retained. And the idea of having two climaxes was a brilliant strategy, which has never happened before. We didn’t know how it would pan well and hence, we went with the flow, shooting whatever we were asked to shoot.
In one of the interviews, you said that you fell down on the sets after Fardeen Khan pulled the chair. He didn’t realize and you tried to sit, leading to the fall. Which scene was being shot at that time?
That was my intro scene. We were rehearsing and orchestrating the whole scene. I happened to pull the chair. There was none and I happened to fall on the ground (laughs).
There are so many senior actors and you fear, ‘Mere liye retake na ho jaaye yaar’, ‘What will they think?’. That nervousness and pressure were always there. It goes without saying. Thankfully, everyone was very comforting. Our director (Tarun Mansukhani) was so good. Once you give a good take, he’d say ‘Haan, ho gaya’. He won’t talk much but he knows he’s got the shot.
It was heartening to see how Tarun Mansukhani was hailed by Nana Patekar and others at the trailer launch…
The way he assembled so many actors and completed the shoot on time was a feat. He also would enact the scene to the actors, so that they know what he is seeking for them.
Who were you closest to on the set?
We were all almost hanging out together. Hum log khaana bhi saath mein khaate the. When you have so many senior actors, do you think you would seclude yourself and sit in one corner? Hence, everyone used to be together and we all had equal bonding. For the rest of time, we were working on our scenes and shooting them. So, overall, it was a fun, entertaining and learning experience.
A lot of people, including me, felt that maybe you were the killer…
(Smiles) Yes, a lot of people did think so. They speculated that conspicuously, she was there and that made her the prime suspect. The idea was to confuse people.
Please tell us about the climax shoot, where all the characters are flying…
(Laughs) We rehearsed for it. We are stuck on a harness. It was so good. Bahut tez hawa chal rahi thi! Yet, it was a fun ride for us. Throughout the shoot, there was laughter, comedy, and songs. Bahut mazedaar shoot tha.
How many days did you shoot for the film?
We shot almost 40-50 days.
Nana Patekar said at the trailer launch that he used to speak in Marathi with you guys…
Yes, he was. The whole time, he was teaching me Marathi. He would constantly say, ‘Yeh sab log angrez hai’! It was also fun doing the Phoogdi dance with him.
You have become a sensation on social media, thanks to your appearance in ‘Laal Pari’…
I am so overwhelmed with the response I got for ‘Laal Pari’. It went viral and grabbed the eyeballs.
It’s just amazing to be having this journey from Bigg Boss to Vimal ads to Housefull 5 and being the viral girl. My mom and dad are also very overwhelmed. It is beyond their imagination. Especially when I did the reel with Yo Yo Honey Singh sir, things took a different shape altogether. Now, whenever I go, people address me as ‘Laal Pari’. It feels so good!
Speaking about your parents, what did they think of Housefull 5?
They loved it. Beti unki screen pe aa gayi. Aur kya chahiye abhi? This is just the beginning. The real hustle starts now. We are hustlers and we come from different (non-film) backgrounds. Hence, for us to get a foothold is a different ballgame altogether. Nevertheless, I am very grateful of my makers to think that I was worthy of this part.
Do you think a big film of this sort helps grab the eyeballs of the industry and also the audience?
100%. This is definitely something people are going to watch. The same applied to Bigg Boss. You get noticed there. It’s not necessarily what are you doing there; the idea is that you get noticed there. The same thing happens here. It’s an ensemble cast; you are an integral part of the script. Ultimately, you get noticed with commercial films. I don’t have a background in the film industry and yet, I got to do such big a film. I have been grateful to the makers, writers and co-actors for giving me that respect and allowing me to stand amongst stalwarts.
There were reports that you are doing a film with Chad Stahelski, director of the John Wick film series…
We’ll talk about it when things move a bit more. When you speak at the appropriate time, it’s much more fruitful.
Is there anything else in your pipeline besides this project?
Yes. God is kind. There are 1 or 2 projects that I have been working on.
What about Housefull 6?
(Laughs) Right now, we are still engrossed in Housefull 5. But I hope Housefull 6 is made soon and I hope to be a part. Please ask Sajid (Nadiadwala) sir about it!
